According to South Korean sources, North Korea has conducted a missile test. Pyongyang has fired a ballistic missile, the South Korean military said on Thursday.

It was fired in the direction of the East Sea, also known as the Sea of Japan. The South Korean General Staff did not initially provide any further details.

The Japanese coast guard and the prime minister’s office said North Korea had fired a suspected ballistic missile. On Monday, North Korea declared the launch of a reconnaissance satellite a failure. The satellite “exploded in the air during its first flight and could not be launched,” the North Korean Space Technology Agency said, according to state media.

Relations between North and South Korea are currently at a low point. North Korea’s ruler Kim Jong Un announced that he would expand the development of weapons – including tactical nuclear weapons. In response, South Korea and the USA increased their defense cooperation.
