The end of the school year is usually a time for celebration for most families, but for some parents in the Carrollton-Farmers Branch Independent School District, it’s a bittersweet moment as they prepare to say goodbye to four schools. McCoy Elementary, Central Elementary, Furneaux Elementary, and Long Middle School are all set to close their doors for good.

“It doesn’t really make any sense. I mean, we’re still trying to wrap our heads around it all,” said Iris Moore, whose son is a student at McCoy Elementary. Moore and Brady Barnett, another parent, both expressed their disappointment, stating that they actually moved to the area specifically for the schools that are now being shut down.

The district has pointed to financial challenges and declining enrollment as the main reasons for the closures. State funding per student has remained stagnant for six years, putting additional pressure on the already strained budget. For families like Moore’s, this means their children will be starting their third year in the district, but at their second new school. Despite the difficult circumstances, school administrators are trying to make the transition as smooth as possible for students and staff.
