Eleven people were missing after a fishing boat sank in South Africa on Saturday. The boat sank 30 nautical miles off the Cape of Good Hope, rescue services said.

The fishing boat got into distress on Friday and made an emergency call. Boats, helicopters and planes were used to search for the missing people.

Authorities said they were not giving up hope of rescuing the fishermen alive, even though air and sea searches were initially unsuccessful. “My prayers are with the families of those missing,” said Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis.

According to the South African Rescue Organization, there were 20 crew members on board the ship, nine of whom were rescued. They had reached safety on a life raft and were picked up by other fishing boats.
