“Despite the cold: Be careful with your gas consumption”: Klaus Müller, President of the Federal Network Agency, warned in “moma” to be careful when heating. Most recently, the Germans burned one percent of the gas supply in just one day.

It could be one of the coldest Decembers in the past ten years, but the President of the Federal Network Agency, Klaus Müller, once again called on the population to save gas in the ZDF morning show: “Despite the cold, my request: Be careful with your gas consumption.”

Within a day, the filling levels of the gas storage facilities in Germany had recently fallen by a full percentage point. “That should remain an outlier,” warns Müller – also in view of the savings targets that have been set for business and private households that have not been achieved. “Things will become critical if we don’t achieve the minus 20 percent savings over the whole winter.” You can easily endure a few cold weeks, but the currently high consumption should not continue in the following months.

Especially in the private sector, with the falling temperatures, more gas is being used than hoped, explained Müller. A shortage is not to be expected – “one is very, very far away” from that. Especially since Germany has taken good precautions. The memory is currently 92 percent full. “Be careful with the heating in your own four walls” is the motto. After all, not every room has to be heated all the time, it is also worth taking a look at the optimal setting of the radiators. And, Müller continues, you have to keep an eye on the next winter of 2023/2024, which is why you don’t want to empty the storage tanks too far.
