Labor Minister Kotyakov: poverty is one of the most acute problems in Russia

Minister of labor and social protection Anton Kotkov called poverty one of the most acute problems of Russia.

“first and foremost, is poverty. We have a fairly high level of poverty that should be put at the forefront of all our main areas of activity,” said Katkov, reports RIA “Novosti”. According to the Minister, the problem of poverty is complex, its solution needs to work on improving the level of incomes.

According to Rosstat, the population with incomes below subsistence level increased in the first half of 2019 200 thousand to 19.8 million people, the poverty rate increased from 13.3% to 13.5%.

Another urgent problem is the declining birth rate in Russia, said Katkov. According to Rosstat, the natural decrease of the population of Russia amounted in January-October 2019 259,6 thousand people, the highest figure for the last 11 years.
