Interstellar comet Borisov is falling apart

the Comet Borisov, the second in the history of the object, in the eyes of mankind has arrived in the Solar system from interstellar space, collapses. This is evidenced by the observations described in the publication of Astronomers Telegram.

Recall that the comet 2I/Borisov was discovered in August 2019 Russian Amateur astronomer Gennady Borisov. Analysis of the orbit showed that it is drawn around the Sun, and follows through the Solar system in transit. Tailed visitor was the second open interstellar object after Omwamwi found in the end of 2017.

In December 2019 Borisov comet approached the Sun at a minimum distance (about twice the distance between the sun and Earth). Now she’s moving away from our star to never to it to return.

In March 2020, astronomers working with the 1.3 m OGLE telescope, has recorded an increase in brightness of the comet Borisov. In the period from 4 to 5 March, it increased by about 0.3 magnitude. Comet kept the brightness level to 8 March. On this day, she was still 0.4 magnitude brighter (but certainly not overshadowed the beautiful ladies). Total for a few days the Shine of the heavenly bodies increased by 0.7 magnitudes.

This means that the nucleus of the comet is falling apart. In this process, in the surrounding space are thrown out all the new masses of ice, which reflect sunlight. Therefore, the brightness of the object increases.

Recall that astronomers have studied the comet Borisov in some detail. However, the second in the history of interstellar visit — quite an interesting event to telescopes tracked the guest, until it finally disappear from sight. As reported TASS, in the coming weeks to monitor the comet is the famous “Hubble”.

By the way, earlier “Conduct.Science” ( wrote about the unexpected increase in brightness of other comet that is approaching Earth.
