Russia’s permanent representative to the UN, Vasily Nebenzia commented on US policy towards Iran. About it reports Reuters.

According to him, the US goal is regime change in the Islamic Republic or the creation of a situation in which Iran is literally nothing to breathe. “It’s like putting a knee on someone’s throat,” — said the Russian diplomat. It is noted that the sebenza in his statement made a hidden reference to the death of a black George Floyd, who died in police detention.

This statement diplomat made in response to the initiative of the United States on the extension of the arms embargo imposed on Iran indefinitely. China also opposed the proposals of the American representatives.

Earlier, the US Secretary of state Mike Pompeo has warned Russia and China about the negative consequences of a possible lifting of the arms embargo with Iran. In his opinion, the actions of that country can undermine the stability of energy prices.

The U.S. has repeatedly demanded to extend the ban on arms supplies to Iran, which expires on October 18 of this year in accordance with the terms of the so-called nuclear deal between Tehran and the United States, Russia, China, Britain, France and Germany. In 2018, the American side announced its withdrawal from the agreement and threatened Iran with additional sanctions.

Tehran, in turn, has suspended the implementation of several items of the deal, under which Iran’s nuclear program needs to be seriously reduced (in particular, Iran needs to export abroad a large part of the enriched uranium and to stop work on its enrichment) in exchange for the lifting of restrictive measures. Tehran says ready for further talks if Washington will excuse the withdrawal and pay compensation.

Moscow insists that the arms embargo against Iran must be completely removed after 18 Oct. Now the official supply of arms to Iran can be made only with the prior approval of the UN security Council.

According to the newspaper “Kommersant”, in 2016, i.e. after the introduction of restrictions on deliveries of weapons, Iran has asked the Russian military equipment and weapons for a total amount of eight billion dollars, but contracts prevented the restrictions of the UN security Council and lack of funds from Tehran.
