In a National Park tzipori in Northern Israel, archaeologists found a marble head of a lion, the age of about 1800 years, which served as a crane in a street fountain for drinking water and was included in the list banned by the sages of the Talmud idols.

About the opening with reference to the Management of natural resources and parks reports The Israel Times of Israel. It was made in the ancient city of Sepphoris. They found a well-preserved piece of marble sculpture, which was an ensemble of street drinking fountain.

Scientists believe that it is made in the form of a lion. The artifact at the time, and its age is estimated at 1,800 years, served as a tap from which flowed drinking water. These products are widely used in the Roman Empire and were widespread on the territory of modern Israel.

However, Israeli archaeologists remind us that discovery is precisely the type of “idolatrous” head, which is the Babylonian Talmud forbade Jews to use.

we are Talking about quite controversial treatise “Avodah Zarah”. Scientists have known different versions of this document. It is believed that one of them was written in Sepphoris – a possible place of creation of the Mishnah, the first written text containing the basic dogmas of Orthodox Judaism.

In “Avodah Zarah” the sages of the Talmud warn the Jews from drinking water and other beverages from vessels made in the shape of the head of a mythical hero or an animal, including of such cranes. The treatise explains that putting my lips to the vessel, the person applied by the mouth to the idol. However, this warning has been removed from many later versions of the Talmud, published in Europe.

the Size of the artifacts found are 15х12,5 cm. The gaping jaws of a lion from which water flowed, has a diameter of two centimeters. The crane was manufactured, probably of marble, imported from the territory of modern Turkey. Similar lion heads from Turkish marble has previously been found during excavations in national parks Hamat Gader, Beit Shean and Caesarea.
