“Akademik Nikolai Strakhov” was on his way to one of the most little-known from a geological point of view, parts of the Barents sea, to its North-Eastern sector.

the researchers plan to obtain new data about the history of the ice cover that was in this area in the geologic past.

– a Huge glacier repeatedly attacked and retreated, leaving traces of their “life” in particular sediments and the modern relief of the sea bottom, – says associate Professor of geological faculty of MSU named after M. V. Lomonosov, head Floating University UNESCO-MSU Grigory Akhmanov. – We will explore the features of the modern background and a focused discharge of natural fluids, especially hydrocarbon on the sea bottom. This so-called “cold breath” of the Earth. And it is no less intriguing than the better known “hot” – volcanic. And not least: could have a direct impact on the environment and climate change on our planet.

According to the scientist, students and young scientists entrusted with the most complex tasks in the expedition. They will handle all the new material, writing reports and articles on results. This is the essence of the Floating University.

One of the participants of the research flight – a graduate of Moscow state University Marina Solovyova on the ship for the first time. In her “piggy Bank” several expeditions Floating University on lake Baikal.

“In the expedition I will lead a team of geophysical units. This in part is the uniqueness of the format of the Floating University. It provides an opportunity to learn not on the standard task according to the classical scheme and the examples in real life – on real scientific research, which no one knows in advance what the results and even discoveries we will come, – quotes the words of the scientist, the press service of the Ministry of education. – This approach is very quickly turning students into young professionals capable to lead your own research group”.

For 7 years with the Floating University Marina became a Pro not only in Geophysics, their main specialty, but also in marine Geology, gas Geochemistry. Learned the basics of navigation, planning expeditions and good governance of the group.

But the student of the geographical faculty of Moscow state University Yana Kirillina – beginner, goes to a scientific expedition for the first time.

– the ship of Geophysics, lithology, Hydrogeologists, microbiologists, engineers-geologists, geochemists and other scientists. Each has its own task, your work front. But globally we have goal is to cohesively and effectively to carry out geological, geophysical and geochemical study of several areas of the North-Eastern part of the Barents sea, – says Yana. For me this is a great opportunity to learn from experts in their field, gain invaluable experience, to plunge into neizvestenth & inviting different world.

the Flight research vessel “Akademik Nikolaj Strakhov” is only part of the expeditionary program, funded by the Ministry of education and science. In addition it is actively developing Floating University in the Arctic and lake Baikal. It is planned to expand a program of support for southern and far Eastern waters as well as to attract research Floating University foreign scientists.

it is Important that great interest in the project have businesses offshore and oil & gas industry. Some of them have become constant partners of the program Floating University.
