New whirlwind in the Catholic Church: A priest who received 1.15 million euros from the church to pay off his gambling debts is apparently himself affected by the sexual abuse of the church. This is reported by the “Bild” newspaper.
Accordingly, the priest wrote a letter to the Archdiocese of Cologne in April 2014, in which he stated that he had been abused by a priest between the ages of 13 and 18. This was not mentioned when the high payment was announced. When asked why not, the diocese of the newspaper did not answer.
Against this background, Matthias Katsch, a member of the Association of Victims of Abuse, sharply criticizes the high payment. It is measured with “double standards”, he criticized to the “Bild” newspaper. Victims who become priests themselves would obviously be preferred. Victims of abuse usually only receive around 50,000 euros in damages.
