Friday, August 12, 9:06 p.m.: Isabel Gose won the silver medal in the 800 meter freestyle at the European Swimming Championships. The 20-year-old clocked a time of 8:22.01 in Rome on Friday, only beaten by Italy’s Simona Quadarella.

Bronze went to Merve Tuncel from Turkey. For Gose it was the first individual medal at a major international championship on the long track. At the World Championships in Budapest, about a month and a half ago, she took sixth place as the second best European. The second German finalist Leonie Beck swam in eighth place on Friday.

“I’m very happy that it finally worked out and that I came so close to my best time,” said Gose and congratulated the winner: “It’s always fun to swim with her,” said the Magdeburg native.

The first medals will be awarded at the European Swimming Championships in Rome on Thursday. German swimmers are not among the favorites in the decisions on the first day of competition in the open-air pool. Isabel Gose wants to qualify in the morning for the final on Friday in the 800 meter freestyle.

As the first German starter, medley swimmer Marius Zobel jumps into the water at around 9.30 a.m. in the race over 400 meters. Long-distance swimmer Florian Wellbrock will try again to get one or the other gold medal. Of course, the big competition from the USA is missing at the European Championship.

In addition to the pool swimmers, the synchronized swimmers also start in the European Championships. The open water swimming, diving and cliff diving competitions take place later in the title fights.
