People who are overweight or obese are at a much greater risk of Contracting coronavirus. This is evidenced by a new study conducted by the national experts of Britain, reports the Independent.

“to Lose weight — one of the ways to protect themselves from threats COVID-19 and in General to improve health,” said Prime Minister Boris Johnson, discussing with journalists the results of the study.

He urged citizens to “summer weight loss” in anticipation of a possible second wave COVID-19. Johnson said that he “dropped six pounds” after coronavirus infection.

"Coronavirus impossible to win"

Experts from Public Health England (PHE) came to the conclusion that people who are overweight with a body mass index (BMI) of 25 to 29.9 have a higher risk if they contracted the coronavirus.

The researchers found that BMI from 30 to 35 increases the risk of death from Covid-19 to 40%, while a BMI higher than 40 increases the risk by almost half.

In Britain, only 2.9% of the population have a BMI of 40 or higher. However, they account for nearly 8% of the patients who are in intensive care.

“Obesity is not only a chronic health problem, which we always knew. This is a big problem for people suffering from Covid,” said Susan Jebb, Professor of nutritional medicine, University of Oxford.

Professor Jebb said that “every lost kilo” will reduce the risk of falling in hospital with coronavirus.

The expert from the Alliance on the fight against obesity believes that now is “an incentive for the food industry to reduce the amount of sugar, fat and salt in foods” and that will benefit everyone.
