Deborah Peoples, the newly elected representative for Fort Worth’s District 5, is no stranger to local politics. She has a history of running for various positions, including mayor and county judge, without success. However, she remains resilient and determined, never letting defeat define her. Peoples’ victory in the May 3rd election marks a new chapter in her political career as she takes over from Mayor Pro Tem Gyna Bivens, who had previously endorsed one of Peoples’ opponents.

Bivens, despite initial reservations, has graciously accepted Peoples’ win and even went the extra mile to ensure a smooth transition. She took the time to learn Peoples’ favorite perfume as a welcoming gesture. Known for her contributions to lowering crime rates in Stop Six, preserving trees, and boosting home construction in District 5, Bivens leaves behind a legacy that Peoples aims to continue and build upon.

Now serving alongside Mayor Mattie Parker, whom she ran against in 2021, Peoples looks forward to shaping the future of public safety in Fort Worth. With Police Chief Neil Noakes retiring, Peoples is keen on being actively involved in selecting a new chief who can work effectively with the diverse communities within District 5. She emphasizes the importance of fostering a sense of safety and collaboration among the 46 neighborhood associations under her jurisdiction. Despite potential council divisions, Peoples remains optimistic about her role and is already engaging with constituents to address their concerns, such as the lack of streetlights in Far North Fort Worth. As she aptly puts it, “I know how to bring people together.”
