Federal Minister of Justice Marco Buschmann (FDP) has warned of compliance with the rules in the event of a possible repetition of the parliamentary elections in Berlin. “Such a disaster must not be repeated,” said Buschmann of the “Bild am Sonntag”. “That would also be ammunition for anti-democratic propaganda.”

As a citizen, he was “horrified” by what happened in the elections on September 26, 2021. Buschmann continued: “It is a boundless embarrassment that it was not possible to organize democratic elections appropriately in our country’s capital. At the same time, the ongoing proceedings show that our democratic and constitutional control mechanisms are working.”

Law professor Ulrich Battis believes a complete repetition of the elections to the House of Representatives is necessary. “The historically unique failure of the election management in Berlin has legal consequences: the elections for the House of Representatives and district councils must be repeated in their entirety,” said Battis.

Berlin’s FDP parliamentary group leader Sebastian Czaja warned: “We have to be careful that Berlin does not degenerate into a banana republic.” Capital CDU leader Kai Wegner said: “So far, Berlin can’t have an airport. After the election chaos, it became clear that Berlin can’t hold elections either. It is enough!”
