Deputy parliamentary group leader Dirk Wiese: “Russian propaganda, incitement from the right – in tandem with Sahra Wagenknecht – as well as the unspeakable allegation of social tourism by Friedrich Merz are ingredients for the fact that the mood in the population is becoming more tense”.

The political pressure due to the increasing number of refugees is growing – and with it the concern that the mood in the country will change. However, the number of refugees is not only increasing from the direction of Ukraine. “Even the well-known escape routes, such as via the Western Balkans, are currently presenting us with enormous challenges,” says Dirk Wiese, deputy chairman of the SPD parliamentary group, the Augsburger Allgemeine. “In contrast to 2015, however, we are prepared.” Increased border controls on Slovakia and political pressure on Serbia have already had an effect.

However, Wiese is concerned about the mood in Germany. He also holds political actors responsible for this. “Russian propaganda, incitement from the right – in tandem with Sahra Wagenknecht – and Friedrich Merz’s unspeakable social tourism allegation are ingredients for the fact that the mood in the population is becoming more tense,” says the social democrat. And the attack on a refugee accommodation in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania shows that words have already been followed by deeds. “I can only appeal to everyone to stand together,” warns Wiese.
