VW wants to become more emotional. The Wolfsburg-based company is primarily relying on the new electric Bulli ID. buzz But that’s hardly going to be enough, especially in Europe, and the US market is also complaining about the VW Beetle that was discontinued in 2019. The new edition therefore has good chances.

However, fans of the cult ball will have to be patient: Volkswagen is only likely to launch its Beetle as an electric model again in 2025/2026. It will then probably be on the road as a four-door model on the variable MEB modular system, which also has its big brother ID. Buzz and models like ID.3, ID.4 and the ID.5 are at home.

Car working title: ID Beetle. It’s not clear yet if that’s his real name. But as with the previous “New Beetle”, you should probably be able to order the desired name – be it “Beetle” or “Beetle” – as lettering for the tailgate. With the electric Bulli ID Buzz, VW is already surfing on the retro wave, whereby the vehicle is not primarily a commercial vehicle like the “real” Bulli” T7, but rather a lifestyle cruiser for rich ecos.

There are probably great opportunities for the electric Beetle, after all, the ID Buzz was already a hit with a very positive response. The relaunch of the VW Beetle as the successor to the Beetle has met with only moderate success in Europe since its launch in the late 1990s. Things looked very different in the USA, because here the Beetle produced in Mexico (formerly on the platform of the VW Golf IV) became an absolute favorite with the public.

Therefore, it was left in the program as a sedan and cabriolet for as long as possible in order not to lose customers to other brands. After all, VW didn’t exactly have the big emotions on offer in the USA with models such as the Jetta, Passat, Atlas and Golf.

This should be done with the VW ID. Buzz will be different, which will not celebrate its premiere in the USA as a version with a long wheelbase until the second half of 2023. A model like the VW ID. The Beetle would therefore be an asset for the Volkswagen portfolio in the USA in particular, but it could also attract new customers in Europe and add a more emotional touch to the electric theme. After all, in the medium term it could also be an alternative to the discontinued combustion models VW Golf and Polo.

The electric retro wave – which even cult V8 cars like the Mustang could not escape in the USA – offers manufacturers the opportunity to use their own history to promote sales and improve their image. However, some manufacturers also deliberately opt for “anti-retro”. In any case, the electric Beetle would have a number of competitors:

The question remains whether the VW ID. Beetle on the MEB platform will then have rear-wheel drive or, like the small entry-level models VW ID.2 and Cupra Rebel, will have front-wheel drive. The performance spectrum of the VW ID. Beetle should be between 110 and 221 kW / 150 and 300 hp. An electric range of 350 kilometers in the entry-level variant should be sufficient against competitors from Mini, Toyota, Opel or Peugeot. In terms of price, the VW ID. As before, the Beetle will not be a bargain – hardly anything should go below 30,000 euros.
