1. FC Köln mourns the loss of its former defensive all-rounder Andreas Gielchen. As the Bundesliga soccer club announced on Friday, the former FC professional died at the age of 58 after a short, serious illness.

“The FC family is deeply shocked,” said Vice President Eckhard Sauren: “Our thoughts are with Andreas’ family and we wish the bereaved a lot of strength.”

From 1980 to 1991, Gielchen wore the jersey with the billy goat on the chest and celebrated his Bundesliga debut in 1983. He played a total of 165 competitive games for the first team. Gielchen was twice runners-up with FC and reached the 1986 UEFA Cup final against Real Madrid. There, the Cologne lost to the royals after the return leg (1: 5, 2: 0).
