Today Ukraine officially applied for NATO membership. As President Volodymyr Zelenskyy announced on Friday, Ukraine wants to become a member as soon as possible using a simplified procedure.
Zelenskyy said: “We are already de facto allies. In fact, we have already demonstrated that we are compatible with the Alliance’s standards.”
And he explains that an “accelerated procedure” is being requested.
A statement from NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg was also expected on Friday evening. The content of this is so far unclear.
