Proud of VW group boss Herbert Diess (61) proclaimed: “We will celebrate the world premiere of the Golf where it was invented, and where he worked for 45 years and built developed: in Wolfsburg, the Autostadt.” But even if the Golf Show on Thursday evening, more big words, and will – “never before has a Golf was progressive. With five hybrid versions, he electrifies the compact class, its interior architecture provides a new Dimension of intuitive operation,” says Diess –, we get the feeling that this could be the last great Golf performance.

Instead of in the big spot light car fair IAA in Frankfurt a month ago (there was instead call with the ID 3, the new age of Electric vehicles in the VW out) was moved to the Golf world premiere, a month after the back and into the provinziellere Wolfsburg. And although This speaks of “electrify the compact class”: In truth and In fact the VW ID 3 does this. The new Golf VIII, in contrast, there is, in contrast to the predecessor, not more as a pure electric variant, but “only” with the hybrid drives.

Intelligent and networked

But back to the big Show and the new Golf VIII. on the Outside he remains with the familiar dimensions and familiar look faithful. In the interior it offers, but with a digital Cockpit, the new voice control Alexa, the Mobile Key (Smartphone makes the classic vehicle keys, unnecessary) and constant connectivity (allows Streaming, web radio and other Online Features) already Revolutionary for its class.

Technically, the Golf VIII is now assisted Driving up to a speed of 210, uses – in our eyes, more important – as the first VW by means of Car2X technology, the swarm intelligence of the traffic and warns the foresight against danger.

Eight new drives

Up on the no-longer-available all-electric variant (eGolf), there is the eighth Generation of Golf with petrol (TSI), Diesel (TDI), natural gas (TGI), Mild Hybrid (eTSI, – 48V) and Plug-in-hybrid drives (eHybrid with a 13 kWh battery).

All petrol and diesel engines are turbocharged direct-injection engine with a power range of 90 to 300 HP. Eight drives are completely new; two three-cylinder petrol engines (90 and 110 HP), two four-cylinder Diesel (115 and 150 HP) with a two-fold AdBlue injection, as well as four of the five Hybrids.

Five equipment lines

In the five trim lines (Golf, Life, Style, R-Line and GTE) will start sales of the new Golf VIII in December (then the Swiss prices to be communicated), and the first vehicles are expected to be delivered in March 2020. Future Golf-VIII-buyers need to exercise some patience.
