Policy of the European Union (EU) against Belarus is one of the reasons that Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko will retain power. It is reported by Handelsblatt.

August 9, according to “the Rambler”, in Belarus presidential elections were held. According to preliminary results, the elections were won by incumbent President Alexander Lukashenko. He scored more than 80% of the vote. After the end of voting in the presidential elections in cities of Belarus started the mass protests.

Belgium and the Netherlands appealed to Belarus

“the Belarusian opposition is daring — it is necessary to have a lot of courage to confront the murderous regime in Minsk,” — said yesterday the German newspaper Handelsblatt.

At the same time it expressed confidence that audacity will not help the opposition to overthrow Lukashenka for three reasons: the Belarusians are deprived of the gene of protest, Russia will not leave Lukashenko, and he is able to prevent a split in his surroundings, the king’s awards.

Handelsblatt explained the wealth of Lukashenka’s regime that the EU imports from Belarus goods in billions of euros.

It also expressed the view that the success of a protest depends on its mass, the ability of the opposition to the protracted struggle and the willingness of the West to promote him.

“the Probability of this (assistance of the West. — Approx. ed.) Mala — the EU is too afraid of confrontation with Russia”, — concluded the newspaper.
