Christian Lindner and Franca Lehfeldt will officially tie the knot on Thursday (7 July) on Sylt. On Saturday (July 9th) the church wedding follows in the evangelical church of St. Severin, also on Sylt.

The fact that the Finance Minister is getting married in a church is surprising in that he left the Catholic Church after his 18th birthday – and therefore no longer pays church taxes. He also told Die Zeit in 2019 that “Christianity is not the main source of our system of values” and thus underlined that he could not do too much with faith.

Christian Lindner also emphasized at the time: “It is a hurdle for someone like me who is interested in science to deal with metaphysical questions. The dogmas add to that. I am not a hard atheist or even anti-church. But I’m not one to go to Christmas mass pro forma once a year. I do not need that.”

So the Minister of Finance seems to be making an exception for the church wedding with his Franca.

But how is it possible for Christian Lindner and Franca Lehfeldt to marry in a church? According to the “Bild” newspaper, the journalist is said to have left the evangelical church some time ago. A church wedding is actually only possible if at least one partner belongs to the church.

For St. Severin, however, the Finance Minister’s wedding is not the first celebrity wedding. In 2018, designer Guido Maria Kretschmer (57) also said yes to his longtime partner Frank Mutters (67). This is sometimes also a sign that St. Severin’s Church stands for tolerance, which is probably why Christian Lindner and his Franca can get married there, despite leaving the church.
