The Greek composer Vangelis is dead. This is reported by the AFP news agency. Vangelis is considered one of the pioneers of electronic music. He gained notoriety in particular through his film music for “Blade Runner”, “The Hour of the Victor” and “1942 – The Conquest of Paradise”. Vangelis was 79 years old.

Vangelis, real name Evangelos Odysseas Papathanassiou, died on Tuesday at the age of 79, according to a Greek news agency and AFP agency, citing his lawyer.

The artist has been hospitalized for weeks in France – where he has lived since the 1960s – for Covid-19.

Vangelis is considered one of the pioneers of electronic music. He achieved worldwide fame in the 1980s with his compositions for the film “Chariots of Fire” (“The Hour of the Victor”), which earned him an Oscar. Vangelis also wrote the music for “Blade Runner” or “Conquest of Paradise” and for many documentaries by Jacques Cousteau.

Vangelis, who actually studied painting, also had a special connection to space exploration. He dedicated his eponymous album to the ESA mission Rosetta.
