the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev met with U.S. Secretary of state Michael Pompeo, who is in Nur-Sultan on an official visit. Recalling that the United States was the first country to recognize the independence of Kazakhstan, Tokayev said: have a very close relationship the two countries have good potential, which can be used for further expansion of cooperation.
He also conveyed best wishes to the President of the United States Donald Trump, expressing hope to meet him in any part of the world, preferably in Kazakhstan, reports TASS. Tokayev also expressed hope for the successful holding in Tashkent on 3 February the next meeting of the dialogue format C5+1 (“Central Asia — United States”) and reported on the establishment in Kazakhstan of the post of special representative for Afghanistan.
Pompeo at the meeting with the President of Kazakhstan, as before, after talks with the foreign Minister Mukhtar Tleuberdi, praised political reforms in the country. The Secretary of state praised Kazakhstan’s efforts on returning citizens from the war zone in the middle East as part of operation “Zhusan” and noted the contribution of the Republic to the restoration of peace in Afghanistan.
Pompeo is visiting Kazakhstan as part of their Eurasian tour. Prior to that, he visited Kiev and Minsk, and from 2 to 3 February will be in Uzbekistan. In Tashkent, he will meet with President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirzieev and Minister of foreign Affairs Abdulaziz Kamilov, and will also take part in the already mentioned Ministerial meeting in the format of C5+1.
