The monument to Swedish king Karl XII is replaced by the statue of ecoactivists Greta Thunberg, since it is a “symbol of the atrocities and old-fashioned values”. The proposal was made by the former mayor of the city of umeå Jan Beringe (Jan Björinge) in the column for Aftonbladet.

He stressed that in many countries gradually dismantle the statue of “the oppressors” — figures that were alien to democratic views. As an example, Beringe pointed out at the demonstration against racism in the different countries where the demonstrators began to demolish historical monuments.

According to the politician, statues set in order to impose certain views.

“by (…) government agencies and municipalities would be much more prudent to liberate the public from the characters of atrocities and old-fashioned values,” — said Beringe.

According to him, the parks and gardens of Sweden have to decorate the monuments to the people who work for the benefit of mankind. As an example, policies led ecoactivists Greta Thunberg and Nobel peace laureate Dag Hammarskjold (Swedish statesman).

Beringe also proposed to use augmented reality technology to create interactive presentations instead of the real monuments. For example, people could get information about a particular monument, using a QR code and they can see who and when has built the statue and why it was demolished.
