People will be able to protect against radiation on the moon and Mars, if you build a dwelling at a depth of about a meter, said the head of Department of radiation safety of manned space flight Institute of biomedical problems of RAS Vyacheslav Shurshakov in an interview with RIA Novosti.
According to him, for protection from galactic cosmic rays person must be “spudded” to a depth greater than 70 centimeters. “If the depth is smaller, then the radiation dose on the contrary will be more,” — said Shurshakov.
In September 2019, the founder of the American company SpaceX Elon Musk presented the prototype of a reusable space vehicle capable of carrying cargo and astronauts to Mars and the moon. The spacecraft called the Starship. Its length is 50 meters, and the weight excluding fuel and cargo of about 120 tons. During the presentation, Musk said that Starship, capable of carrying up to 100 people can be the basis for the colonization of Mars and the moon.
