a Few topics affect us humans so radically, and solve as many emotions as the diet. From the beginning of our existence, we are in need of food. And while some people still suffer Hunger, fight against Overweight and obesity, with corresponding consequences for their health and the health care systems in the countries concerned.

Currently no more than seven and a half billion people on earth, by 2050 there are expected to be around ten billion. They all need access to safe, healthy, and affordable food.

The way we feed ourselves, for our health, and how we produce our food has a direct impact on the environment and the climate. As a recent report of the intergovernmental panel on climate change shows, causing the whole food production chain, between 21 and 37 percent of man-made CO2 emissions.

With new technologies against climate change

We must therefore use our Lands and forests are only sustainable in order to secure the nutrition of the world’s population. We need to do to mitigate climate change. Universities around the world are working on solutions to make food production and consumption more climate friendly.

the spectrum of the ETH Zurich explored topics ranging from drought-resistant plants and new varieties to new strategies to avoid food waste. Smart Farming could help in the future to increase crop yields and reduce pesticide use in agriculture.

Since 2011, the ETH is equipped with the World Food System Center is a center of excellence that promotes collaboration with local and global partners from the industry. Such an approach is so important because it needs solutions along the entire value-added chain. New technologies can unfold their effect only when agriculture, processing industry and consumers accept and practice.

plant-based chicken as a meat replacement

New food technological processes may help to satisfy the growing demand for meat alternative, in the Form of plant-based foods. First ideas for alternative sources of protein have managed to make the leap from the laboratory. Such as an ETH Spin-off has launched a vegan chicken from peas, its production compared to normal chicken meat to two-thirds of the greenhouse gases and land area needed one part and only about half of the energy.

How good is your product arrives, are currently testing a variety of Restaurants in Zurich, Lucerne and Geneva. The peas, chicken is likely to run the Güggeli nor the rank, such as the Olma-Bratwurst must fear the competition from a vegan Burger.

But the group of people consumed meat, aware and open to vegan food, is greater. And thus, eaters and strict meat develops between the convinced meat-refusers, a new force that can cause a change in our consumption behavior.
