The speaker of the Bolivian Parliament Eva COP on Friday said that hunger is the main reason of violations of sanitary restrictions in a pandemic, and demanded the interim government to end the criminalization of social protests.

"the Transitional government should understand that people are desperate because they have no money for food… we need to develop a comprehensive social policy which will help these people to stay home and not go out," said the COP, which is in the Senate, the Movement for socialism, MAS.

The government Janine Agnes has repeatedly accused the socialist movement of ex-President Evo Morales in supporting the protests against quarantine for political purposes.

The speaker of the Senate denied the statements of support movement MAS street protests, including five days of riots in the city of Cochabamba with the overlap of the streets and clashes with police. According to her, in protests against quarantine in different regions of the country there were no political motives – the problem is hunger, because the citizens are not allowed to come to work.

The COP also said that the conflicts in Cochabamba "can happen anywhere, if not implemented comprehensive measures and policies to solve social problems".

Earlier this week entered into force the decree of the provisional government of Bolivia, allowing to interpret information of any kind as a threat to public health and transforming the distribution of such information into the category of criminal offense. The decree was met with massive criticism and accusations of infringement of freedom of speech, but the government claims that this measure is directed against the malicious attempts by small groups to undermine peace in the midst of a health crisis. According to media reports, several activists from social networks has been arrested on charges of disinformation and incitement to mutiny.
