In Moscow on 4 June 1965 was held the opening ceremony of the monument to Mikhail Lermontov (1814-1841). Main archive Directorate of Moscow has provided documentary materials and photos of 55-year-old.

the Idea to erect a monument classics in Moscow, first appeared in the 100-th anniversary of his death. a decree adopted by the Council of people’s Commissars of the USSR. But the Great Patriotic war and to implement the Executive order failed.

on 29 October 1956 the Executive Committee of the Moscow Soviet adopted a decision “On the construction site of the monument to Mikhail Lermontov”, which as the site for its installation was determined Lermontov square (now square Red Gate).

all-Union competition on the best project of the monument was carried out in several stages: in 1952, 1958, 1959 and 1964.

on 29 April 1964, on the eve of the celebration of the 150th anniversary of the birth of Lermontov, was a resolution of the CPSU Central Committee on the erection of a monument to the poet in Moscow. And on 3 June of the same year, art-expert Council on monumental sculpture of the Ministry of culture of the USSR in the discussion recognized the best project group of the sculptor. The authors were charged within a month to carry out a working model of the monument.

September 18, 1964 the Executive Committee of the Moscow Soviet adopted a decision “On the construction of the monument to the great Russian poet Mikhail Lermontov in commemoration of the 150th anniversary of his birth.” Today this document is stored in the archival office. According to him the Main architectural and planning Department of the city was instructed before 1 October 1964 to complete a work project and estimate for the construction of a monument to the poet and to present the project to the improvement of the adjacent territory.

June 4, 1965 at 16:00 on Lermontov square held a solemn meeting dedicated to the opening of the monument. In the stands was attended by the leaders of the party and the government, Leonid Brezhnev, Alexei Kosygin, Andrei Kirilenko, the Minister of culture of the USSR Ekaterina Furtseva, Chairman of the Executive Committee of Moscow city Council Vladimir Promyslov, as well as writers and artists.

on this day, special emotionality distinguished the speech of the literary critic Irakly Andronikov, who was one of the initiators of the contest. He believed the creation of the monument to Mikhail Lermontov in Moscow is not only the expression of a truly national recognition, but also a manifestation of the Patriotic feelings of the Muscovites of different generations.
