Less than a month away from its release, the new live-action adaptation of The Little Mermaid continues to make waves. Disney unveiled new posters for the feature film directed by Rob Marshall this week.

We see in particular Ariel (Halle Bailey), Ursula (Melissa McCarthy), King Triton (Javier Bardem), as well as Flounder (Jacob Tremblay) and Sebastian (Daveed Diggs). But the look of Ariel’s two friendly marine companions is far from unanimous on social networks.

Their hyper-realistic appearance, very far from that of the 1989 cartoon, caused fans to react, emphasizing the overly “generic” image of the characters, which was even “scary”. Some compare them to the animals in the 2019 live-action adaptation of The Lion King, which was criticized for its lack of magic.

The Little Mermaid hits theaters on May 26.
