The war against Ukraine is costing Russia a lot of money. According to preliminary data from the Treasury Department, spending on the military increased by almost 40 percent in the first four months of the year.

Accordingly, the government in Moscow spent 1.7 trillion rubles (a good 25 billion euros) on defense from January to April. This corresponds to almost half of the funds earmarked for the whole of 2022.
