EU high representative for foreign Affairs and security policy, Josep Borrell, will visit Iran, the foreign service of the EU. During the visit, Borrell will participate in the negotiations on a Joint comprehensive plan of action (SVPD) on its nuclear program and de-escalation in the middle East.
the Visit is scheduled on 3 and 4 February. During his meeting with President Hassan Rouhani and speaker of Parliament (Majlis) of Iran Ali Larijani and foreign Minister Javad Zarif.
the report States that Borrell has a mandate to conduct diplomatic dialogue with regional partners to de-escalate the crisis.
the Future of SVPD was called into question after the unilateral withdrawal of the US in may 2018. In parallel, the US imposed sanctions against Iran. Iran responded with a decline in performance of its obligations under the AGREEMENT. The crisis in relations between the US and Iran escalated after an air strike on a suburb of Baghdad, which killed Iranian General Qassem Soleimani.
