Sour, delicious, healing: lemons are true miracle weapons that should not be missing in any kitchen. But what makes the lemon so healthy and why is it an ideal fat killer?
It is sour, bright yellow and fruity in taste – thanks to its essential oils, the lemon ensures a good mood and concentration. But the yellow citrus fruit has much more to offer.
When it comes to health, the lemon is the all-rounder par excellence and is generally known for its high vitamin C content. The citrus fruit offers a whopping 53 mg per 100 g at 35 kcal. This makes them one of the best supporters of the immune system and thus prevents colds and infections. Vitamin C is very important for the defense against viruses.
Lemons also protect body cells, aid in wound healing, aid in weight loss, make skin look firmer, and reduce digestive problems. After a night of drinking it is also the best weapon against a hangover as it helps the body sober up.
The citrus fruit not only convinces in terms of health, but also in terms of taste: citric acid gives dishes from the hot and cold kitchen that certain something. The zest of the lemon is also good in dressings, fish or cakes. It gives the dishes an aromatic citrus taste.
The high amount of vitamin C in the lemon makes it easier for the body to produce the hormone norepinephrine, which is so important for optimal fat burning. The hormone helps release the fat from the fat cells, making it easier for the body to use the fat reserves for energy production.
The vitamin is also important for the production of collagen, which also affects the firmness of skin tissue and thus also supports firm contours. In addition, together with vitamin B6 and niacin, it is responsible for the production of L-carnitine, which the body needs to burn fat in the muscles. L-carnitine develops its full power through the combination of strength and endurance training.
Good to know: losing weight increases the body’s need for vitamin C, because it increases in stressful situations – and fat loss means pure stress for the body. Since urine production increases when you lose weight, more water-soluble substances are excreted, including vitamin C.
Drinking fresh lemon water or a homemade ginger tea with lemon in the morning stimulates the metabolism and burns fat. Boil the water and let it cool down a bit. Then add the juice of half a lemon. If necessary, you can sweeten the drink with a little honey or agave syrup. To turn the lemon water into ginger tea, add a piece of peeled, sliced ginger. For ginger tea, add a piece of peeled ginger root in slices.
Good to know: Vitamin C is not heat resistant. That’s why you should only add the lemon juice to the water when it has reached a comfortable drinking temperature – otherwise too much of the valuable vitamin will be destroyed.
