this year maasis Vilniaus teatras Vilnius Small theatre, established and led by Rimas Tuminas, celebrate thirty years. Today remember the great Blizzard of Masquerade, zakryzhevskyy for years, adventure Lithuanian Small theater on the big real, not a virtual tour in Russia. And fragments of conversation on the Gediminas Avenue in Vilnius and in Leontief lane in Moscow about the Lithuanian theatre, a long-time passion for Chekhov, dreams, memory and the ability to forgive time…

the cemetery of Lithuania “Masquerade” starts and ends in a cemetery. The Director Rimas Tuminas believes that theatre are people who understand their mortality and life teetering between childhood and death. It opens unnatural aesthetics (“Art of flying bullets – here’s what’s interesting in a duel,” says Rimas Tuminas), possibly shifting the capital of intrigue in the Outback (“the Classics need to shoot somewhere in the province, where there is more space for art”, it is the same).

of Course, great was the temptation in the “Masquerade” bring Nina as snake woman, entered the path of Vice, in this way wiping the dust from the secular plays and forced to speak – whether good or bad, but to say. But such traps for others. In Tuminas Arbenin (Arvydas of Dapsys) is not the hero-lover, a handsome tempter, all tasted in my life. His look is smart, strong, and Nina clean and enthusiastic. Even too. Under Khachaturian waltz this smart husband to her little neck is not shifting: it’s all jealousy equally stupid. Besides Nina’s relationship – she stood no exotics: any pair could happen to this story. Told that the Director first conceived, to the main characters played by dolls, for which something could tell awesome music (composer faustas Latenas), some other characters, some things. Jealousy, for example, there was growing would be proportional to snowball… At the end of “Masquerade” among other acting exercises there is a scene when the sprawling snowball (read – jealous?) sweeps all but Nina remains and she finds in the snow a coma, only its imprint – relief, eyebrows, eyelashes, then the ribbon pulls out her Pointe… This finale shakes unconditionally.

every visit to Moscow, your legendary performance of “Masquerade” was becoming shorter and shorter. In the original Lithuanian version, it was four hours. At the Moscow Chekhov festival – three. Then you have narrowed it down to two and a half. You so easily abandon the idea?

Rimas Tuminas: as “Masquerade”, of course, your correction made the festivals and exits of the theater on a tour abroad. There, they can not withstand our places was long and tedious. Anyway, I think the shorter the performance, the better. The work done never not lost. We do not mind. Besides, I do in life try not to regret, but only to continue. And avoid precise answers – all made us go back in our memory, then to come back. Don’t complain – everything is constantly changing. And so much is because it reveals the memory. Probably, the theatre for me is the memory, which I could live. And I want to live memory.

dreams of the future isn’t more beautiful memories?

Rimas Tuminas: In the past, all very light, well…

And there it is possible to remember only what do you like?

Rimas Tuminas: Yeah, and besides, more often we do not perceive the world today. And the memory of the last stops this Eclipse present. I feel very well in the architecture of the late XIX – early XX century. This is my life, this is my house, my books, my theatre. Maybe we will go further and come to a beautiful XVI century. There’s still time.

it is strange, when you look back and see that released, wonder – and when it was? But all that was done, was done in order to fit… in the beginning. One night, twenty years ago, I someone visited. Like someone else’s delicate hand rested upon. I even woke up. There was no one around, only a whisper: still ahead, that’s all starts… and I believe it. A dream it was or not, but the theater and lives – are in a perpetual endeavor. It is pointless to resist, and the sooner you accept that, admit that in front of you – the eternal beginning, the more you have time in your life…

P. S.
