The CDU politician Dagmar Schipanski is dead. As the party confirmed, the former candidate for the office of Federal President died last Wednesday.

Former German presidential candidate Dagmar Schipanski is dead. According to her family, she died on Wednesday after a short, serious illness at the age of 79. Schipanski was a long-standing member of the executive committees of the CDU.

Born in Thuringia, she was the first woman to head the Science Council of the Federal Republic of Germany in 1996. In 1999 she ran for the office of Federal President, but was defeated by the later Federal President Johannes Rau (SPD).

From 1999 to 2004 she was Minister for Science, Research and Art of the Free State of Thuringia. She was also a member of the Leopoldina and did voluntary work, for example as President of the German Cancer Aid.
