As a paratrooper in the 56th Air Regiment and a loyal soldier in the Russian army, Pavel Filatiev went to war against Ukraine. After being injured, he was sent home as a soldier. Now he was smuggled out of the country – as a war doubter and Putin critic.

The 34-year-old is writing a book entitled “ZOV” – those letters that have become a symbol of war patriotism in Russia. In it he describes the everyday life of Russian soldiers at the front, which is characterized by fear, hunger and frustration. And describes how after a month outdoors, without protection, without a shower, without proper food, the mood finally changed when the port of Cherson in southern Ukraine was conquered. In order to escape the war, some comrades even began to wound themselves on purpose.

Shortly after the publication of his book, Pavel Filatiev was smuggled out of the country by the human rights organization Gulagu.net.

In an interview with the ” Guardian ” Pavel Filatiev now finds clear words. “I see no justice in this war. I don’t see any truth here,” he says. He is not afraid to fight in war. “But I have to feel righteous to understand that what I’m doing is right. And I think it’s all failing not just because the government stole everything, but because we Russians don’t feel like what we’re doing is right.”

He tells of a key scene: “We were under artillery fire near Mykolayiv. At this point I was like, we’re just doing bullshit out here, what the hell do we need this war for? And I really had this thought, ‘God, if I survive, I’m going to do whatever I can to stop this.'”

Now he can no longer remain silent, although he knows that he probably won’t change anything. “And maybe I acted stupidly to get myself in so much trouble,” said Pavel Filatiev. In Russia, even using the word “war” instead of “military special operation” is illegal.
