Scientists have found a way to get electricity from algae

blue-green algae can be used to generate electricity. Breakthrough development created a research group from St. Petersburg state electrotechnical University “LETI”.

As the press service of the University, the biofuel element was developed on the basis of two types of cyanobacteria Anabaena and Synechococcus. This is without any core microoganism. The peculiarity of these prokaryotes in that they get energy from sunlight, we take water from the electrons and from the air is carbon.

blue-green algae are involved in oxygen photosynthesis and they are responsible but that more than 2.3 billion years ago appeared on Earth oxygen. In the nature of Anabaena and Synechococcus are widely distributed, but for experimentation they are cultured in a special resource centre of the University.

Scientists have created several types of anodes in the base of which lay the glassy carbon, placate, and carbon felt. The maximum efficiency was shown by elements and using bacteria Synechococcus. When using hybrid carbon anode, it amounted to 183 milliwatt per square meter. Now scientists are working to improve the efficiency of the biofuel element.
