The staff of the laboratory of Geoecology of the North of the geographical faculty of Moscow state University as fully as possible analyze the process of destruction of marine shores in the Arctic and how it is influenced by anthropogenic and climatic changes, according to the website of the journal “Bulletin of the Department of Earth Sciences RAS” (the official publication of the Geophysical center of the Russian Academy of Sciences).

The publication says that the economic development of the region mainly concentrated on the coast of the Arctic ocean, so the scientific knowledge of the speed of destruction of the coast is important for planning activities in the polar regions and enhance security infrastructure.

Scientists will simulate the process of destruction under various scenarios of climate change and ice cover in the Arctic basin, will assess the effect of anthropogenic factor.

“the Construction of engineering structures in the coastal zone of the Arctic seas often leads to irreversible consequences for the environment: a violation of thermal and lithodynamic modes triggers trigger mechanism of destruction of the coast and contributes to the development of thermoabrasive”, — stated in the text.

The result of the work of researchers should have an understanding of where, why and how fast receding shore in the Arctic zone, which is the most dangerous situation and will look like the coast in decades.

Affected thermoabrasive the shores of the Arctic ocean are being destroyed at a rate of one to five meters per year in some cases — up to ten meters. Because of this, every year Russia loses a few hundred square kilometers of territory.
