Best songs: Bad Decisions, The Adults Are Talking, Eternal Summer

With his first album since 2013 Julian Film and the rest of the gang in The Night tried to expand the indie-horizon – with varying success.

In the course of nine more or less Carlings-friendly songs swipe at both the grunge, EDM (electronic dance music) and softrock. Perhaps it is the extremely time capsule-esque sound of early 2000’s indie rock they are trying to shake off, but in all essence, it becomes pretty transparent.

It doesn’t feel motivated by new musical sources of inspiration, rather a sometimes desperate search for new legs to stand on.

In the Julian Film texts has never been particularly much to take with them to ponder. For me they have had a whiff of a two-kvelders låtskriverkurs, but in the beginning song The Night so new and exciting that you didn’t do something. This type of rock doesn’t need good lyrics, I thought.

The debut album “Is This It” from 2001 was to define the entire indie rock genre in the 2000’s. It is one of my favourites from his youth, and was to consolidate The Night’ position as a modern legend. It was exciting to follow the band beyond in the ^ according and the 2011 album “Angles” was a show of how indierockere can follow trends without losing my footing. Then came the “Comedown Machine” in 2013 and confirmed the impression of a band in constant development.

When we now come to The Night in the 2020 start “The New Abnormal” is relatively promising with The Adults Are Talking, a song that builds on the legacy of the Film melodious and distinctive chorus, from the early 2000 figures. It is a promising start, and for being so brash: It is in rockefoten.

and Then it happens.

direct horrible estimate on the Brooklyn Bridge two Chorus amputerer rockefoten and I wonder why The Night should represent US in Eurovision. Why is the united STATES with Eurovision at all?

This song is a sickening simple abomination that should never have existed in the directory to a respected rock band as The Night.

In the musikkambulansen’ve got life in me again to start the next song, Bad Decisions, and it serves as life-saving medicine against makkverket I just heard. Here are the suddenly The Night back in the good, old kind. It offers delicious vokalfilter, a juicy melody and a really skatevideo-chorus. Is there hope yet?

the Next song, Eternal Summer, is a textual simple, yet musically interesting song that embraces the modern indie-aspects in a much better way than earlier in the record. This song should have been the numbers for the other experiments on “The New Abnormal”, for after the first gjennomlytting I feel like a guinea pig in a morbid sjangereksperiment from an aging rock band. For a roller-coaster-ride it has been.

Good grunge – and softrockband often have very talented songwriters on the team, and talented EDM artists know a good hook and a chorus that kicks the football.

The Night is still neither grunge, softrock or EDM – they are an indierockband on the quest for new influences.

It gives “The New Abnormal” a rough and messy touch. The film is still one of the coolest frontfigurene in indierocken, but he must find out what kind of band he will have before the next disc.
