In what part of the country, Raiffeisen deserves more money? In the Romandie, the German speaking part of Switzerland or in Ticino? Where did you mortgage pending? And where the largest banks are? Questions like these are not answered by Raiffeisen Switzerland.

The banking group of almost 250 independent cooperatives. The group financial statements include only consolidated Figures and the limited amount of information to the individual banks. But right now, as in the Raiffeisen group on new forms of Corporate Governance is being debated, they would be interesting.

The “Handelszeitung” has worried, therefore, of all the banks the financial statements and the business reports for the first time evaluated statistically. Raiffeisen had the opportunity, the raw data view and highlight the error.

the First finding of the analysis: In the Romandie, the banks were 2018 more profitable than in the German part of Switzerland. Measured in the balance sheet they generated 20 percent more business success. And, although they are, on average, about the same size.

The analysis also shows where the banking group has their capital reserves. Again and again, these were in the past years, a theme for Raiffeisen succeeded in temporarily just to meet the minimum requirements of financial market supervision. So it was conceivable that some banks had too little reserves. The individual balance sheets were as again and again for discussion. The Bank group zankte once with “Inside Paradeplatz” a report focused on the deep reserves of individual banks. The Numbers were indisputable. However, in the interpretation of the Bank and the media were not in agreement.

In fact, in the balance sheets of the banks have very little equity. The extreme case of Raiffeisenbank under the Emmental is formed with an equity ratio of just 0.75 per cent. With a balance sheet total of 3.4 billion Swiss francs, the largest of Raiffeisenbank in morals only comes to 1.49 percent. The average across all banks is 3.3 percent. With a view to the high proportion of mortgages, the balance sheets a little bit of a calming image.

hidden reserves in the balance sheets

But the picture is only partially true. In the financial statements of banks refer to hidden reserves that are not counted as equity. It was less to do with unrecognized values of properties written down as to provisions, says Raiffeisen spokeswoman Angela Rupp. For the group financial statements according to “True and Fair View” will be transferred, therefore, for the most part in Equity. The “Handelszeitung” has the simulated for each individual Bank. In the case of Emmental, the equity ratio rises to 6.3 percent. For all banks, which stands at 7.9 percent.

but Why do the banks hide their equity? The reason is likely to be in the profit tax. With the allocations to the “other provisions” can be reduced to the tax relevant income. It is a lot of money: the end of 2018, 9 billion Swiss francs were good overall in the rest of the provisions.

Lower the equity ratio of Raiffeisen Switzerland. Even taking into account the provisions of the St. Gallen Headquarters only comes to 4.1 percent. Only, one would have to say. Because the end of 2018, provisions of CHF 250 million were reversed. To Finance, among other things, to copyist on the Legacy of the Era Pierin Vincenz. The reserves of the Headquarters in St. Gallen, contracted strongly.

New balance of power

For many People in the regions that would be another reason to want the sphere of influence of St. Gallen reduce. In the context of a structural process, the Bank group is now considering how it wants to organize in the future. In particular, the supervision of Raiffeisen Switzerland, is to be regulated for the first time. This was decided last week in the run-up to the Assembly of delegates.

in the Future, each Bank will have one vote at the delegate Assembly. So far, a more complicated key, which distributed the voting power due to the Size of the banks was considered. The Amendment would lead in individual cases to a shift of influence: The Raiffeisenbank Sion is approximately 360 times as large as the Raiffeisenbank Yberg in the Canton of Schwyz. With the new model, both would have to say the same.

criticism of the new model appears to have been expressed by the banks from the Romandie. This fear of the Power of the delegates could move in the German part of Switzerland. The data show that the good would be so, because on average, the banks in the two parts are equal in size. The omission of the criterion of Size therefore change little.

shifts in the voting power is likely to give it to yet, because within the parts of the country, there are differences. An example: The three banks in the Canton of Uri have Active, on average, a half a billion Swiss francs in its balance sheet. In Nidwalden, where there is only one Bank, the balance sheet is four times as large. The new rule comes Nidwalden loses to Uri, to influence.

the Raiffeisen-tribe of the Canton of St. Gallen is still highly fragmented, and would benefit from the Reform: The 33 banks average total assets of 677 million francs, and lie there-with the overall Swiss average of 822 million. Also the Ticino would be a better influence.

luck was also the Raiffeisenbank Yberg with 178 million Swiss francs balance sheet total. Ten years ago, have defended their members against a merger with a neighboring Bank. Without a trace of structural change is not over, however, was itself of Yberg. Recently, the Mini-cooperative, a new Bank building began in operating. And castle for one of the two branches.

Raiffeisen banks: So were the data
Raiffeisen Switzerland are collected and published no collected information to the individual Raiffeisen banks. In order to create appropriate statistics, has analyzed the “trade newspaper”, therefore, the individual financial statements of the 246 by the end of 2018, existing cooperatives, as well as those of the cooperative Raiffeisen Switzerland. The data were in the Form of more or less structured PDF files.

partly mechanically, partly manually. Raiffeisen Switzerland had the opportunity to check the collected raw data to detect any errors. Notes still existing errors are gladly accepted.
