Queen Elizabeth II has been on the throne for 70 years and that deserves to be celebrated. The British are expecting a state of emergency for four days – this is what the program looks like.

Elizabeth II is Queen for 70 years. She is the first British monarch to celebrate such an anniversary. Celebrations take place from Thursday to Sunday over a specially designated long weekend. You can find an overview of the program here.

With thousands of street parties across the UK, people want to celebrate their Queen’s 70th jubilee. A snap poll of about a dozen municipalities by the Local Government Association (LGA) found that more than 1,000 parties are planned over the June 2-5 long weekend. Extrapolated to the whole country, this would mean more than 16,000 street festivals, as the LGA announced on Saturday. In many communities, the administrative fees for road closures were specifically eliminated – there were around 9,500 of them nationwide for the Diamond Jubilee of 2012.

“Communities are pulling out all the stops to help their residents celebrate a historic day for our country,” said LGA President James Jamieson. After two years of the corona pandemic, people could finally celebrate with their friends and neighbors. Not only street festivals are planned, but also large picnics and tea parties as well as beacons.

Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected to attend the central celebrations in London. Numerous festivals and major events in honor of the 96-year-old Queen Elizabeth II are also planned outside of the British capital. Once all people in the country get an additional non-working holiday.

A few days before Queen Elizabeth II’s 70th jubilee celebrations, six soldiers from one of her life regiments and a veteran were arrested for drug dealing. The British Ministry of Defense announced on Friday that the members of the Irish Guards were also suspected of usury and money laundering. “None of the soldiers under investigation will take part in the Queen’s planned platinum jubilee parade.” Five of the seven suspects were released on bail, the Sun newspaper reported.

The 1st Battalion of the Irish Guards, one of the most active units in the British Army, is to march in the “Trooping the Color” parade, which opens the festivities in London on Thursday (2 June). As the so-called Colonel of the Regiment, Prince William is the royal patron of the Irish Guards and wore the uniform of the troop at his wedding in 2011. The unit is also known for its mascot, an Irish wolfhound.

As the newspaper “Daily Mirror” reported, several properties in different parts of the country were searched at the same time. “The army will not tolerate illegal or fraudulent behavior,” the ministry said. The case is now being investigated by the military police. The drugs were cocaine, according to The Sun.
