Puerto Rico is a freely associated state under the control of the United States – the third of November will hold another referendum on the status of the island. The relevant law was signed by the Governor Wanda Vazquez.

Citizens will be asked one question: should Puerto Rico be immediately accepted in the United States as the 51st state. At the same time, Washington is not obliged to accept the results of the vote, the final decision will be made by the US Congress, RIA Novosti reported, citing a local newspaper Nuevo dia.

in 2018, the permanent representative of Puerto Rico in Congress, submitted a bill on recognition of the territory of an American state by 2021. Residents of Puerto Rico voted in a referendum for joining the United States as the 51st state in 2017. However, the U.S. justice Department did not support the vote in Congress.

Puerto Rico is recognized as a United States territory since 1898. Local residents are American citizens but they cannot vote in presidential elections and have only one representative with limited voting rights in Congress.
