French soccer star Kylian Mbappé stays with Paris St. Germain. The move to Real Madrid was actually a done deal. Now he canceled the Spanish record champions – via WhatsApp.

For a long time it looked as if French soccer star Kylian Mbappé (23) would join Real Madrid on a free transfer this summer. The surprise followed on Saturday evening: Mbappé extended the contract until 2025, as PSG officially announced.

The reason is probably the promised mega salary. 100 million euros net per year. As “Eurosport Spain” reports, PSG is said to have offered the striker 300 million euros – just for the signing of the contract. That would make Mbappé the highest-paid footballer of all time.

Meanwhile, Mbappé personally canceled with Real President Florentino Pérez. “I inform you that I have decided to stay at PSG. I want to thank you for the opportunity you gave me to play for Madrid, the club I’ve been a fan of since I was a child.” And further: “I hope you understand. Good luck in the Champions League final.” Spanish journalist Josep Pedrerol revealed the private WhatsApp message on the program “El Chiringuito”.

The promised mega salary plus contract extension causes trouble in Spain’s league, which would have been happy about the top-class growth. Spain’s league boss Javier Tebas publicly complained about the contract extension and made allegations against PSG President Nasser Al-Khelafi.

“What PSG are planning to do by renewing Mbappé with huge sums (who knows where and how they’re paying that) after losing €700m in recent seasons and having more than €600m in wage bills is an insult to them the football. Al-Khelafi is as dangerous as the Super League,” he tweeted. According to several Spanish media, he now wants to have the case checked by Uefa.
