Chinese scientists have identified the cause periods of extreme heat, which in recent years occur more often, leading to frequent deaths and damage to agriculture. It turned out that the heat waves associated with the anomalous anticyclone over northeast Asia is increasing due to global warming. Article researchers published in the journal Environmental Research Letters.

experts have studied the record breaking heat of 2018, which lasted in China for 33 days and caused the hospitalization of more than 71 thousand people due to heat stroke. They determined that the cause of extreme weather events has become a stable atmospheric circulation in the form of a powerful anticyclone — area of high pressure responsible for the high temperatures and clear, cloudless sky.

it Turned out that the anomalous anticyclone contributed nearly half of the contribution in the heat. This type of circulation began to occur more frequently in the last decade, from 1991 to 2017. Another factor was the increase in average temperatures due to the accumulation of greenhouse gases in the Earth’s atmosphere. Scientists predict that continued global warming will lead to more frequent occurrence of deadly heat waves in northeast Asia in the coming decades.
