The right of Russian President to become a Senator does not come automatically. Thus the Chairman of the Federation Council Valentina Matviyenko described the future of Dmitry Medvedev, the former head of state, reports TASS.

According to her, the law should prescribe the mechanism of action of this amendment.

“the package of laws will also be prepared and this mechanism,” — said Matvienko.

The idea of lifetime appointment of senators voiced in February — this initiative was made by a member of the working group on the elaboration of proposals for amendments to the Constitution Alexander Chubaryan. According to him, he was inspired by the Italian experience. “They have in the Senate is composed of all the presidents that have been in the country. And most importantly, the President has the right within this General quota [enter] senators for life. People who have very significant position in society: public figures, scientists, artists, doctors”, — he explained.

Currently, the Federation Council is composed of representatives of the regions. The President has the right to make their nominations, however, the presidential standard is not more than 10 percent of 17 people. According to the adopted amendments to the Constitution, this rate increases to 30 representatives. Seven of them can be appointed senators for life for service to the country.

In Russia on 1 July was the final day of the popular vote for amendments to the Basic law. Constitutional changes supported 77,92% of voters. The amendments entered into force on 4 July.
