The last video of little Elizaveta Dmytrieva (4) went around the world. It shows a fun-loving blonde girl pushing a pink and black pram and chattering happily to herself. Her mother took the video of “Liza” who was born with Down Syndrome and uploaded it to Instagram. Barely an hour later, Liza was dead. The girl died in her pram when Russian missiles hit her.

Her mother was also seriously injured and was taken to a hospital. She’s doing better now, at least physically. “She was my life,” says Iryna Dmytrieva of the “Washington Post”. And further: “What Russia took from me is unforgivable.”

She clearly remembers the moment of the accident: a deafening noise that she mistook for an airplane. How she looked up and recognized it as a “huge rocket.” She immediately crouched down to protect her child. But I did not have time. It was over in a flash.”

Amidst the dense, dark smoke, she would have known immediately that Liza was dead. Iryna Dmytrieva remembers screaming for help. But nobody reacted.

She herself was taken to a clinic – in critical condition. Doctors removed shrapnel from her abdomen, including a piece inches from a vital artery. Her left leg was crushed. During an operation on her left arm, fragments of the bullet were removed. She still has no feeling in some of her fingers.

She had to stay in the hospital for a month. From the hospital bed, she helped organize her little daughter’s funeral. She should be buried in a white dress – “like a princess,” she says. A photo shows the little girl in a white dress and a flower crown on her head lying in an open coffin. There are numerous toys at her feet, including a mouse that she took with her everywhere.

Iryna Dmytrieva does not want to look at the pictures of the funeral. So she has the feeling that her daughter is still with her.

The night after the attack, she dreamed of asking her daughter to take her with her, but she refused. “It’s not your time,” she told her in her dream. “You have to live.”

According to UNICEF, nearly 1,000 children have been killed or injured since the war began. The organization assumes an even higher number of unreported cases.

A total of 23 people died in the attack on Vinnytsia on July 14, including Liza and two other small children. The Russian missiles also damaged a nine-story office building, restaurants and residential buildings. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy condemned the attack as an “open act of terrorism”.
