The foreign Minister of Iraq, Fuad Hussein asked a German colleague Heiko Maas to assist in the exclusion of the country from the list of EU countries with weak rules against money laundering and financing of terrorism.

During a telephone conversation Hussein and Maas also discussed a number of topics concerning bilateral relations.

In October 2016, Iraq has been included in the list of third countries with weak rules against money laundering and financing of terrorism. The EU is obliged to identify third countries in which there are shortcomings in the fight against these phenomena, which in turn poses a threat to the financial system of the European Union.
