a Plaster head of Atlanta – one of those who “hold the sky” in the facades of the Catherine Palace in Tsarskoye Selo, was discovered during restoration work at the opening floors of office space. This was reported by the press service of the Museum-reserve.

Presumably, the head got there in 1949, when carried out extensive work on the restoration of the most affected in a year of war the figures of the Atlanteans. Then the most damaged parts of the sculpture were replaced by more durable – made of cement on a metal armature.

Found the head of Atlanta – with traces of gilding. This fact, as well as the dimensions, material, and style of performance has allowed to establish: Atlas – historical, and was Rastrelli.

according to Natalia Kudryavtseva, Deputy Director GMZ “Tsarskoe Selo, Atlanta is quite vulnerable facade decoration, and they are more likely to suffer from the Caprice of the Northern weather. The Museum regularly to restore the sculpture.

– We now just are in search of the most preserved in the model for subsequent restoration of all Atlanteans. The discovery came at an important moment, – said Kudryavtsev.

So that the found text will have the fate of the model: it will remove the form, and cast in plaster. And the originals will be carefully stored in the Museum funds.
