Scientists Vologda state University, members of the expedition “Together to the Russian North-2020” has found a unique discovery – a piece of petrified wood from the Devonian period. The age of these sediments is 300 million years old, reported at the University.

As told to Professor, Chairman of the Vologda branch of the Russian geographical society Nadezhda Maksutova, the finding was discovered during a survey Andoma mountain, one of the main attractions of the Vytegra district. This is the only place in the region where deposits of the Devonian period, come to the surface.

Scientists suggest that the plant fell, and then it somewhat fell asleep. Outside it is coated with mineral layers, and the inside is a cavity with crystals of calcite. Shell finds impregnated ferruginous waters and turned into a ferruginous Sandstone. That is why it is so well preserved.

At the initiative of the Russian geographical society, under whose auspices and passes the expedition “Together to the Russian North”, paleontological exhibit will give to the Mineralogical Museum of the Department of geography of Vologda state University.
