Chinese technology giant Tencent is planning to build a city on 320 acres of land at Shenzhen Bay. The so-called Net City will operate on a stand-alone energy sources and encourage walking and Cycling. The construction is planned in three phases over seven years.

The seven-year project is being developed in partnership with the architectural firm NBBJ and will be designed as a standalone “city of the future” with special focus on eco-friendliness and favorable for pedestrians the green zone.

The city is located on the area approximately equal to the center of Manhattan, construction is scheduled to begin in the second half of 2020, writes The Wall Street Journal.

“In today’s computer world, we are free to imagine highly integrated city that combines spaces for work, living, leisure in order to foster greater synergy between people,” said Jonathan ward of NBBJ.

The first phase of construction will focus on construction of apartments, office buildings and a transportation hub with metro and ferry connections to connect to the rest of Shenzhen. The second and third phase of construction will focus on construction of shopping centers, schools, public parks and sports facilities.

The city is designed to encourage residents to walk or ride a bike, with a limited number of roads for cars.

All buildings are built with terraces to maximize open space, the number of storeys from 1 to 30, most of the buildings will be provided with solar panels on the roofs.

The city will also have a specially equipped coastal space along the Shenzhen Bay, is designed to prevent flooding during storm surges.
