Mass production of vaccines against coronavirus infection COVID-19 in Russia may not be required because of the development of herd immunity, says the head of the laboratory of genomic engineering, Moscow Institute of physics and technology (MIPT) Pavel Volchkov.

"In Russia there is a situation where a large number of people get immunity from COVID-19 naturally. Our laboratory was the first to notice this trend, the mayor of Moscow Sergey Sobyanin officially announced that the affected by the virus about 60% of the population received a collective immunity. This means that the vaccine becomes a back-up option, it is likely that mass production will not need", – said gyroscopes to RIA Novosti.

In his opinion, the creation of a vaccine in different countries became a kind of demonstration of technological possibilities, but most likely, the drug will be unused.

"But it is possible that mass vaccination can resort countries such as China, South Korea and Japan, where the parameters of the collective immunity is much lower than in Russia", – said the virologist.
